After I make a short review for Audio Technica M50X headphone yesterday, this time I want to make a review for my new laptop, Asus ROG GL553VD

First impression when I see this laptop anyway, it is very beautiful. Somehow you can feel more gaming RIG once you compare to the same brand such as MSI GP62M or GL62M, and this engineering notebook has a good screen with wide angel.

Maybe this laptop is not suitable for someone who are looking for a price-to-performance laptop. This laptop is more expensive than another gaming laptops such as MSI GL62M, 7RD, or Dell 7567. For those specification and price of the laptops you can find out by yourself.

This laptop for engineering students is intended for those of you, who are looking for an experience from a high quality laptop with great specification. Okay without any further, let’s check it now.

Function and Port

On the left side of this notebook there is a charger port, a large heatsink with orange color, ethernet port, HDMI, USB 3.0, USB Type-C (non Thunderbolt), Audio Jack Combo (mic + speaker). Asus is smart enough to put all these ports on the left side of the laptop, so it will not interfere us when we  swipe left or right our mouse while playing the game.

On the right side, there is only 1 USB 2.0 port and DVD-ROM. At the front, there are 2 pieces of speakers and 1 piece of card reader.

The bottom of this notebook is cool, I think. Asus is skillful at designing a laptop. At the bottom of this laptop, Asus put cool motive, a rubber feet with orange colour, and has a republic of gamers logo. Thanks to Asus, the design really beneath me now.

Design

The design is really pretty. But when you touch the body of this laptop, you can see a lot of finger print, right? Yes that’s what I dislike. Okay.. Then I try to wipe out with wet tissue or with same fiber cloth but it seems doesn’t work.

So for the tips, if you bring this laptop with backpack, try to put the bottom of this laptop facing your back. While the ROG logo leads out of the body. Because, according to me, the bottom of the laptop is the strongest part. So if you bend, it automatically occurs weight point, and press the laptop.

Well, this seems to be one of the beauty of this laptop, that is when the ROG logo is on. But the brightness of this logo depends on the brightness of the screen. If the screen is off (but the engine is on) the logo is also dead. And if the screen is full brightness, the logo is also very bright. For women, Apple Logo is so beautiful, but for gamers the ROG logo is more beautiful.

This is also one of the two beauty of this laptop is when the ROG logo is on, as well as a cool RGB keyboard backlight. There are 4 areas setting for this keyboard, there is breathing, and there is steady. For the workstation part, the material is made of plastic, no metal elements at all (so safe via xray). Although made of plastic but the material is quite strong, and the advantage of plastic material is not electrically when fit in charge.

Keyboard

Key Travel keybord is also really support for gaming, especially if you like a tactical keyboard. Keyboard travel key is about 2.5mm, but I think i feel tired when use this keyboard for typing.

Power Button

The power button is pretty in my opinion. Asus succeeded to make more futuristic keyboard and clean look. But the lack of this power buttons is when you accidentally touch the button then this laptop sleep instantly. It is still on when the backlit keyboard is all off.

Processor and The Memory

This best laptop for engineering students uses core i7-7700HQ. It is a powerful processor. You can use it for engineering software without any lag. With 16GB DDR4 RAM you can do multitasking so fast.

Tips on Using SSD

Are you now using ultrabook which is usually equipped with SSD type storage? Or do you use a regular laptop but also use or have upgraded your hard disk to SSD? Although both serve as a media storage, it turns out that the SSD needs to treat different than ordinary hard disk.

There are some things that normally and usually we do on the hard disk. But actually it makes the life of the SSD slumped away. At a glance, the following tips weakening the SSD position as the latest media store. But not really. You can still make your SSD durable, not quickly broken and still give you full speed.

Faster Than Traditional Hard Disk

So true. The main advantages of SSDs over conventional hard disks are higher read and write access speed. In addition to slimmer sizes, lighter weight, more battery savings, and more impact resistance because there are no mechanical components moving in them. In a view, the weakness of SSD compared to conventional hard disk is the price that can be two or three times more expensive. but the price trend continues to decline.

Never Do Defragmentation

On conventional hard disks that use discs as written and read media, file fragmentation, or spread of the position of a file in it, greatly affects the read-write process. So in any given period of time, the hard disk defrag procedure is very necessary, so files that read more frequently are placed in the front of the disc, and and tidying up the files fragmented into more sequence. So it will restore the read and write speed. The effect of this defragmentation process is really good in the ordinary hard disk.

While on SSDs, which do not use discs, the defrag process that has to rearrange the files, will only make the read-write process more frequent which ultimately lowers the performance of our expensive SSDs. The same thing, defrag also should not be done on flash disk. Current OS, such as Windows 7 or later version, has automatically disabled this defragmentation feature if it detects you are using SSD as storage.
